A new type of scam
This Scam just happened to me about 10 minutes ago.
I currently have an auction running here on GWguru and someone bought a Zealous Hammer Haft. I contacted the guy ingame and he said he already sold it. I thought: "great, another one of those guys that auction and at the same time look for one ig." But I nearly dropped of my seat when he told me he thought he bought it from me.
Apparently the guy made a PvP character that almost had the same name(Mine's Ferahgo Blackblade). His name was Ferahgo Blackblades or something close to that. He pmed the buyer a few hours ago acting as if he was me and then sold him the Zealous Hammer Haft. Probably the guy quickly ran to his storage, dropped the money and then deleted the character to make himself intraceable.
Watch out for this kind of danger, for me it's only a 4K "loss"(I didn't sell the item but have to find another buyer.) but the same thing could happen to 100K+ items. Scammer makes a PvP character with about the same name as seller, pms the buyer and makes the trade. Then quickly deletes the PvP char and dissapeares.

didnt quite get that , or maybe I did but
From what I understand of that the scammer has effectively stolen your buyer off you because lets say youre selling a Crystalline or something , he would still have to have a Crystalline of the exact same stats or so for any trade to take place whatsoever right?

what...?
how do you lose 4k? you still have the zealous mod right? what i'm reading is he stole your name sold "his own" zealous mod to the buyer.
not really a scam unless he scammed you for that zealous mod...so you really didn't lose anything but time...

It's not a scam with me losing money, but one in which someone pretends to be you and selling it to a buyer in which you waste time and don't have a buyer.

Sad thing is, there is no way to prevent this since it's a user-error.

There is one way to prevent it, by finding out who the guy pretending to be you is, but only the buyer is able to do that sadly enough.

and that's a prevention....how? The scam would have happened already before you can find who a "scammer" is in this case. That's not prevention.

If you add the scammers PvP name onto you friendlist, you'll still be able to identify him even after he deleted the PvP character and you'll be able to give a call to guildies about him.

You don't seem to get it. What I tried to say is that everybody can be a scammer. Let's face it, such scam is not THAT hard to pull out by anyone. How can you prevent this?

The thing is
It matters only to you - the seller got his money.
And someone else the item.
You also cannot prevent this, as this is absolutely in the hands of the seller to sell to the right person, which they might actually not care about.

I think he was saying that if people pay more attention then things like this might happen less. This is why i always add a guru name to my friendlist before trading with them, so nothing like this can happen :P

noir0 has a point to, the simple way to prevent this is looking at the name/adding them

Am I the only one adding buyers/sellers name to the friend list for trades?
(So I can see when they are on).

Scam? More like buyers not caring so long as it is the same price.
If a gas station sells gas for $2.20 a gallon (low chance these days) and the one across the street also sells for the same price, as a buyer, would you care which one you buy from? Granted, if you had some kind of relation with the manager of one of the gas stations or something, it would be different. Pricewise, however, there is no difference. Therefore it is more of lame way of stealing business than a scam.

Life Infusion, you're right about that. THAT would be ok, but the case here was that the guy pretended to be me for a sale

I always PM when I do trades, simpler that way; I also add them to Friend List to see when they are on... kind of weird when they PM you with a slightly different name and arent listed as online =p
